The moment that Abigail Roberts touched the wall in her 50 yard freestyle relay, the explosion of applause and excited screaming was all she needed to hear to realize she had finally broken her school’s 50 yard freestyle record.
The VHS Gymnastics team defeated DAC rival Portage 112.6 to 108.625. The Vikes swept the top 3 spots on Vault, Uneven Bars and Beam as well as going 1-2-4 all-around. The highlight of the meet was Beam, as Jenna Algozine (9.675), Whitney McKeon (9.625) and Rachel Moneta (9.6) posted a 28.9 event score.
Facing the first nationally ranked competition of the year, the Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball team knew that they had to bring everything they had. They did, but it still wasn't enough. The sixth ranked Wolves of Cardinal Stritch University used their size and numbers to take home the CCAC matchup 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 17-25) Wednesday night at the Rittenmeyer Center.
The JV wrestlers went to Chesterton on January 25th to compete in the JV DAC Invitational. The following Vikes had successful performances: Ethan McFadyen 4-0, Jaeden Hufford 3-0, Jack Thursby 2-1, Aidan Pollitt 2-1, and Ethan Gaskill 2-1.
The Valparaiso University men’s basketball team took control of a tight game late on Wednesday evening at the ARC with a critical 12-2 run over a four-minute stretch and held off Indiana State down the stretch to earn a 69-63 victory in Missouri Valley Conference action.
The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball team kicked off its 2018 CCAC campaign when they headed to Elgin, Ill. to take on the Eagles of Judson University. There they found a packed house, full of spectator's eager to witness the first home match in Judson school history. The Eagles fed off that energy, defeating the Wave in four very close sets (25-20, 23-25, 21-25, 27-29) on Tuesday evening.
On Saturday, January 25th, Pat Murphy, former VHS head baseball coach was the 185th inductee into the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. Coach Pat Murphy competed against several Hall of Fame coaches throughout his 28 year tenure at VHS. During that time he accumulated 483 wins, 2 DAC championships, 13 sectional championships and was the IHSBCA Regional Coach of the Year 3 times in 1991, 1995, and 1996.
Gymnastics coach Lorie Cook has just been named the 2016-17 Central Sectional Coach of the Year for Gymnastics by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The Central Section includes the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, and Wisconsin. “The award recognizes coaches who are leading their sport, shaping their athletes, and contributing in a positive way to their community.” Congratulations to Coach Cook!
