Carrying a six game losing streak into this afternoon, and with playoff hopes still up in the air, the Calumet College of St. Joseph softball team had just one goal: win for the seniors. The Crimson Wave said goodbye to their seven seniors on a chilly Northwest Indiana afternoon, playing their last two games of the regular season against Indiana Tech.
Valparaiso University sophomore Brandon Ancona (Belvidere, Ill. / Rockford Christian) was recognized for his excellence both on the courts and in the classroom on Wednesday as he was named to the Summit Academic All-League Team.
While the 2018 season didn't end the way the Calumet College of St. Joseph softball team wanted it to, it's not all bad news. The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced their regular season award winners on Thursday evening, with outgoing seniors Joanna Drew (SR/Warrenville, Ill.) and Geena Locicero (SR/Chicago Heights, Ill.) both making second team all-conference.
Next Up in Crusader Softball: The Valparaiso University softball team heads to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the first time this week, as the Crusaders travel to Des Moines for the postseason event. The fourth seed, Valpo needs three victories to capture the single-elimination tournament and claim the conference championship in its first season of MVC play.
The senior has done it again. Just weeks after participating in the 2018 NAIA Track and Field National Championships, Olivia Askew (SR/Munster, Ind.) punched her ticket to the same meet, but will head to the sunny shores of Louisiana instead of the windy plains of Kansas. Askew aside, the Calumet College of St. Joseph track and field teams both performed well at the Crusader Open, breaking school records a mere 30-minute drive from the Whiting campus.
The Valparaiso University men’s basketball program will travel for the first time as part of the Mountain West-MVC Challenge during the 2018-19 season, as the Crusaders will make the trek to Las Vegas to take on UNLV on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
Crimson Wave men's and women's soccer head coach Mis' Mrak has announced plans for two campus visit days for those interested in playing collegiate soccer at Calumet College of St. Joseph starting during the 2019-2020 school year. There will be two sessions based on gender, with the program focusing on those who will be starting their secondary education during either the fall of 2018 or 2019. The day will feature tours, informative sessions, and one on one time with the individual coaching staffs for both programs.
The day after qualifying Tyler James (JR/Deltona, Fla.) and Jeffrey Holden (JR/Salem, Ore.) into the semi-finals of the individual portion of the tournament, the Calumet College of St. Joseph men's bowling team kicked off the team slate at Sun Valley lanes in Lincoln, Neb. While the team didn't perform up to the high standards they have set for themselves throughout the season in qualifying, the Wave set themselves up nicely for the continuation of team play on Friday.
The middle of the Valparaiso University women’s tennis lineup was in the limelight on Wednesday, as Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) and Dao Sysouvanh (Sun Prairie, Wis. / Sun Prairie) garnered victories over Chicago State at third and fourth singles, respectively. However, the host Cougars came away with a 5-2 win at H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Ill.
