IU Northwest Senior University Free Lessons in Yoga, Saxophone, Internet and More

Indiana University Northwest’s Center for Urban and Regional Excellence offers free workshops for those aged 55 and better through its Senior University program. Workshops take place at various locations on the IU Northwest campus in Gary, Ind. and are available to seniors in Northwest Indiana.

IU Northwest is enrolling now for spring classes. The offerings include:

Write through Grief: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5
Developed to guide people through the process of writing to overcome grief, this workshop will provide participants with strategies to help them win in life and begin the process of writing their life story. Each person will receive a success portfolio with resources and pages designed to help them continue writing. A writing background is not necessary to participate.

Chair Yoga/Aerobics: 4 - 5 p.m., Wednesdays, Jan. 10, 17, and 24
In this blended workshop, seniors will engage in both chair yoga and low impact aerobics. The combination of gentle yoga and light aerobics will allow participants the opportunity to practice flexibility and stability exercises while also improving their cardiovascular fitness.

Introduction to Email and Internet: 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 18 and Thursday, Feb. 15
Receive step-by-step instruction on how to create an email address, secure passwords, and send/receive email. Participants will also learn other email-related techniques including attaching documents, images, and video (on both the desktop computer and mobile devices). In addition, participants will learn how to surf and search the internet safely, save pages, send links, and much more. Attend one or both workshops.

History of the Saxophone in Jazz: 3 - 5 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31 and Thursday, Feb. 1
Led by IU Northwest’s own Billy Foster, this two-part workshop will be a study of the instrument’s great practitioners and their contributions to jazz. This includes Johnny Hodges, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and many others.

Ancient Beer & Wine: 6 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6
Raise your glass to the ancient art and culture of beer and wine from the sands of Ancient Egypt and salty shores of Greece to the dusty trails of Silk Road caravans! This workshop will delve into the ancient processes of brewing and viticulture and explore the history, art, archaeology, and literature celebrating the culture of drinking from King Tut's tomb, Agamemnon's Mycenae, Plato's Athens, the Silk Road, and more.

Joint Pain Seminar: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 23
Don’t let joint pain slow you down! Join Dr. Bayer, Orthopedic Surgeon, to learn more about joint pain and what you can do about it. Participants will learn about joint anatomy, the causes of joint pain, and treatment options.

Parking passes can be purchased at the IU Northwest Parking Permit Kiosks for a fee of $2 per day (exact change and credit cards accepted). Parking Permit Kiosks are located at the west end of parking lot 2 (north side of IU Northwest) and in front of the John W. Anderson Library. Parking passes are not required for workshops that run on Fridays.
