Porter Regional Hospital and Valparaiso University Bring Healthcare Education to Community at Fall Into Health Fair
Porter Regional Hospital and Valparaiso University know that learning is a lifelong process, and it involves a lot more than just sitting in a classroom. That is why the two institutions partnered to host the Fall into Health Fair, an interactive health event for all ages and community members held at VU’s Harre Union Hall that helped people take ownership of their health and futures.
Haiying He, Ph.D., and Luke Venstrom, ’07, Ph.D., will serve as University Research Professors at Valparaiso University for the 2019–2020 academic year. The grants recognize and encourage scholarly accomplishments and will afford He and Venstrom the opportunity to continue creative and original work through one semester of full-time leave with pay or two consecutive semesters with a half-time schedule, plus a $4,000 stipend.
Shedd Aquarium announced today that the first Magellanic penguin chick (Spheniscus magellanicus) bred at the aquarium, which hatched on Mother’s Day weekend, is a female. At a regular check up with the aquarium’s veterinary team, a blood test determined the sex and showed that she has been hitting all the major milestones. Shortly after, the aquarium hosted a contest for staff to choose her name. Shedd volunteers, partners and staff came back with a resounding answer – Nia (NEE-ah)!
1st Source Bank recently donated $24,000 to support the expansion of Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana’s Staff-Led Troop program. Originating in Allen County, the program has since expanded into St. Joseph and Elkhart Counties and will serve a total of 480 girls across all three.

NIPSCO to complete the installation of a new natural gas regulator station at 510 Fisher Street in Munster - a project that interconnects a 24 inch and a 30 inch natural gas pipeline from across the Illinois boarder for the purpose of providing natural gas services to NIPSCO customers.
